Custom Gift Card with my ScanNCut

This time of year I start thinking about gifts. Budgeting for the holidays, people I’m thankful for, ideas I want to make happen craft wise… I just get all full of creative inspiration! Today I’ve created a video tutorial for how I’m doodling my own word art to create custom gift card holders and cards.

Disclosure: I am a paid consultant for Brother International Corporation and have received a ScanNCut from Brother to evaluate. However, the opinions expressed are entirely my own and based on my use of the product.

Here is the card I created in the video – including my new homemade leaves. I love how simple this is but I also just adore that I can use the whole paper – no waste!

There is so much potential here – I also want to create with a pocket inside that word – I will keep doodling, scanning, cutting, and creating and be sure to share with you here!

They’ve exploded all over my local craft store. Pumpkins. From craft foam to paper mache- they’re around but you know? Not usually the prettiest. I picked up a few and this fall I’ll be sharing my how-to’s and tips for redecorating. First up? This painted pumpkin with a bounty of fabulous fabric leaves!

You guys – I just LOVE how this turned out! It’s totally me, and the fabric leaves are fabulous!

ScanNCut homemade words and birthday card

One of my favorite things lately is doodling and then seeing what it looks like when my ScanNCut machine cuts it out of paper. What I LOVE about this is that I can take a word that is big (or small) or other shape and re-size it to the project I need. So often I doodle something and think “it’s not the right size….” well by scanning into my ScanNCut it doesn’t matter! I can just re-size and play!

Today I’ve got a full (long!) video tutorial that will show you how to do that – and how I made this card.

 My key tips are:

  • use pencil first (contrasted with the pen, the machine won’t pick it up!
  • don’t expect it just right on the first sketch, but at the same time don’t underestimate the “do it quick don’t think too much” approach
  • thin pen first, then thicken with more pen strokes or a thicker pen so that it cuts around your shape
  • Scan words separately if you want to be able to manipulate them as separate words
  • Don’t forget to unify the pattern so that you move all the pieces together/everything will re-size properly

Most of all though, have fun! Card making is my favorite for birthdays and thank yous. Something about celebrating a special person combined with crafting that just puts me in a great mood!

I love how fun this turned out – and really it’s a party it could be for a man or woman, kid or adult. If you have any questions or requests with the ScanNCut be sure to email me or leave me a comment – I’ve got so much to share with you and have so many fun things still to come!

ScanNCut project: Autumn Card

Know what my favorite season is? Autumn. For me, it’s the best time of year and I soak it up all the time. I want to share a new project featuring the ScanNCut machine. This card could also be mounted onto a canvas or framed to make it home décor.

Autumn Card
Thanks to the ScanNCut I was able to do some fun stuff for my sentiment as well as create my own stencil to make this project.

Supplies: Paper (Green , patterned, cream , white 6×6 for cutting leaves), 1 button, glitter, double sided tape, assorted acrylic paints, brown ink, orange ink, foam to blend, golden mist

How-To:

1: Using the ScanNCut machine, cut the word Autumn out onto cream cardstock (size 4 ½ x 6 ½ ). Save the word for a future project, we’ll be using the negative space left on the cardstock.

2:  Take a piece of white cardstock (6×6 is what I used) and cut some random leaves ranging from 1.25 – 1.75” wide.

3:  Using a variety of ink colors, begin using the white paper as a stencil to layer leaf designs onto the cardstock that has “Autumn” cut out of it. Using a piece of foam or make-up sponge is a great way to gently apply ink for this project.

4:  Use acrylic paints and repeat the process to add more leaves and texture to the piece until satisfied.

5:  Once satisfied, edge the piece of cardstock with brown ink. Use a piece of foam to softly blend if desired.

Note: At this point in time if desired, add a spritz of golden(sparkly) mist for some sparkle and added depth to the project.

6:  Attach a sheet of double sided tape to the back of the cardstock, making sure the entire word is covered. Do not remove both sides of the adhesive, only the side attaching it to this paper should be exposed at this point.

7:  Pour glitter over the front of the card and rub gently so that all of the area within the letters is covered. Shake off excess.

8: If your cardstock that you have been working on was not trimmed down to size, now is the time to do it. Then stitch to a piece of ( x ) patterned paper with a zig-zag stitch.

9:  Stitch around the edge of a (5 ½ x 7 ½ ) piece of green cardstock. Then attach this to the rest of the card front.

Note: you could use a 7 ½ x 11 piece of cardstock, folded in ½ for this and it would be your card. Otherwise, you’ll need to attach this completed card front to another piece of paper to create the card.

10: Finish the card by painting and attaching several leaves (that you had previously punched out to create the stencil) and a button.

I’ve created a video to show how I used the ScanNCut machine on this project as well:

Note: Brother(tm) International is launching https://scanncutcanvas.brother.com/ which will allow you to convert .svg files to use with your ScanNCut machine on November 8! This is really exciting to me as it will open up so much more possibility for the ability to use pre-made designs. For more information and inspiration on the ScanNCut machine visit www.scanncut.com. You can connect with Brother social media on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest.

ScanNCut project: Halloween treat box

This project utilizes a themed cut from the ScanNCut machine, but I will also show you how to use the machine and just partially do a cut to make your own one-sided borders. I love that the ScanNCut has borders for my scrapbook layouts and everything else. Today I’ve got a gift box project to share with you and a video.

So simple – and I love that with this machine I don’t have to plug into a computer or anything – I can just turn it on and have cut paper bits in mere moments.

Project: Trick or Treat box
What could be better than gifting some Halloween treats to a special person? Presenting them in a beautifully decorated box that can be re-used, of course! This project is fast, simple, and with the help of the ScanNCut machine will produce beautiful results that you can use for any theme!

Supplies needed: 12×12 sheet of black cardstock, 12 x 3 strip of gold glitter paper, scrap of brown cardstock, orange mulberry paper, word stickers, gift box (mine is 5×7, any size could work!)

  • Tear a piece of 5 x 12 paper (I used embossed cardstock) and set on top of the gift box. Mark where the edges need to be, and fold the paper as seen above.
  • If the box is too large for the paper to fit all the way around, simply cut another piece of paper the same width, and attach the edges of your folded paper to it. Once adhered, this cardstock can slide on and off of the box easily.

4

  • Using the ScanNCut machine, cut a pumpkin from orange mulberry paper (size 4 ½” wide), and a topper from a scrap of green cardstock. Adhere to the top center of your black cardstock.
  • Using the ScanNCut machine, cut a strip of glitter paper using the zig-zag border design.
  • Once the machine has cut along the top border you can cancel the cutting – you only need one side to be cut.
  • Cut the glitter paper to the length desired and adhere directly to the box so that the edges peek out from underneath your black paper When it is centered in place.

Now with everything in place, you can simply add a sentiment and a gift inside!
