behind the scenes CHA winter 2012

First off, we are now back at home. Thank you for all the kind words and thoughtful notes of encouragement. Hoping to see Miss E back to her usual self soon…

(Photos above by Melissa Stinson) So many of you said yes, you’d love to see some “non-product” photos/post about CHA. Above you see Shimelle (who is simply put, the best!) with me at dinner, as well as some general CHA/hotel shots.

CHA is 6 1/2 miles of carpeted show floor walkways. Store owners, manufacturers, distributors, media, authors, buyers for on-line and chain stores, and so much more. We’ve covered a lot of the brands/favorites I have from the show and now it’s time for behind the scenes and “other” photos. Obviously this isn’t a “everyone May saw and everything she did” post. It would take days to write that! But here we go.

I figured the first thing I’d share is these photos by Melissa Stinson of me doing my thing…

clockwise from top left: me tweeting + taking pics at Jenni Bowlin booth, catching a quick picture of Tim Holtz doing a demo (which Melissa caught and I think is soooo cool),  sitting down to play with (swoon) French General goodies, and taking a photo (of Melissa taking a photo).

CHA, quite honestly, is exhausting.

Then this happened.

Life moves pretty fast. You never can tell what’s gonna happen next. A trip to ER just to be cautious has become a hospital stay for E (I’m here with her).

A special visitor came today. This beautiful dog (and one other) really brightened an otherwise dull time here in the hospital.

Miss E is doing good. Right now she’s being observed and will be here (and me right by her side) a while longer…

If you’re in my class at Big Picture – it’s begun!! Class materials are up (also watch your email!) and the fun has begun. If you aren’t there is still time to register. I’m grateful for descent wifi + laptop keeping me connected.

Also grateful for all the well wishes from friends and kind hospital staff and for a target so close that has made clean clothes and properly conditioned hair a reality. Being truly clean? It’s made all the difference in me feeling more myself and made me more effective to be here for E.

Crossing fingers for my girl to get well soon and be back at home too!

Spotlight | French General

There were a lot of fantastic products revealed at CHA, and I have a lot of favorites. That said, when asked what my #1 pick of the whole show would be, it’s got to be a line from Jolee’s Boutique.

Now I know, you might be skeptical at first but hear me out. French General is an amazing store I’ve had on my “must visit” list forever, and I drool over the offerings on their website on a very regular basis. They have licensed with EK/Jolee’s Boutique to produce a line of products. Here is their official video that was playing in the booth at CHA:

I saw a lot of “oh wow I love that” or “this is very cool” “this is exceptional” at the show. What makes this collection my #1 pick is that it gave me goosebumps. I lost my ability to speak. It absolutely surprised, delighted, amazed me, and made me SQUEAL in besotted glee.

The packaging is just as fun and can be used as can the products themselves. The textures and colors are perfection. The detail is incredible.

This line of products works beautifully all on it’s own, or mixed with other brands as well. I could see so many uses and applications – and I will be sharing my ideas with you. I want to share a lot more of my photos with you, but not post 40+ pictures here so I’ve mixed them into a slide show of sorts (video) with my favorite song of the moment. (I didn’t have any French inspired music – I should!)

For more about French General visit their website www.frenchgeneral.com If you’re in the Los Angeles area, go visit the shop!

Watch for a lot of French General projects coming from me (as soon as I can get product!) – I have so many ideas for this line. I can hardly wait.

Peek at Field Guide

It’s just days until my Big Picture class starts – are you joining me? If you have questions or want to know more feel free to email me or ask here. I thought today I’d share a few peeks at some of the finished handouts!

Here’s part of the week #4 header/first page of one of THREE handouts. In fact (spoiler alert!) I threw in a handout with a few sketches that week just for fun.

Because I do love my happy crafting! Ok, so here’s another peek, this time week #2…

In week 2, we talk a lot about stamping + inks and I threw in a bunch of ideas in the start of the handout to remind you of all kinds of things you can do. In addition to my project ideas, that is!

Here’s one more peek – this is a project in progress for a later week…

I’m having so much fun with my stash, and a big part of my process of developing class is this:

I think about what works, what doesn’t, and what ways I have of making things simple, fun, and easy. I don’t get into 10hour intensive detail type projects (though that’s cool if you want to!) I stick to ideas and projects that are awesome, but that can be done in more manageable amounts of time. I also show you ideas that can be used on or off a scrapbook layout.

So if you don’t do layouts, there will be some projects for you weekly, and you can take my layout ideas off the page.

Just into pages? cool! I will have at least 1 layout per week (usually more) and most anything you see in class absolutely could be tried on a layout.

Almost every idea is highly substitute-able. You don’t have to have any one specific item to enjoy and learn in class!

The sneak you see above with the sun + ocean? that’s a mixed media canvas project I’m breaking way down into a 4-video series over several weeks. There will be a few other mixed media or altered projects (more in later weeks vs early weeks), but not so many that it takes over class.

I’m really looking forward to guiding some amazing crafters through this class – and I’ve already gotten such great emails about it – I’m excited it’s just days away.

Want to learn more or join in the fun? Check out class info here.

Happy Crafting!

note: I say “almost” all are substitutable because (for example) distress ink has specific properties other inks simply can’t copy. But in most cases you can swap something else out, and part of class is that I’m there to help you figure it out!!

new loves | more from CHA-W 2012

I am still debating a behind the scenes/people photos post from CHA… is that something of interest? Let me know. I can’t decide. For now, I am wrapping up my CHA coverage favorites. I’ve covered a lot so far – and I have compiled some companies who rocked, but either I didn’t have a load of great photos for them or have covered them partially elsewhere. In no particular order here we go…
