party recap:

Just me & 10 girls under the sea.  I did some craftiness, some things worked better than others. What didn’t work/what I learned:

To do that “use plastic table cloths in place of streamers” thing I showed in my last pinterest post is VERY cool… only if you have the right size of space. Mine? Didn’t work. Wrong size room, too high ceilings in one, too narrow for 1/2 a table cloth but too long for a full… So! Streamers it was.

The blue jello with fish candy in it was a big hit. I did it in tiny plastic cups (disposable “appetizer” cups from party store). ONE PROBLEM: Don’t put candy fish in the jello when you make the jello, or even any significant amount of time before you serve. Jello needs to be set (or fish just sink to bottom and look, well, dead). Also? Too long in the jell0 and the fish.. well… they start to dissolve into it. and the texture + color is GROSS!!! Like decaying fish. SO… yeah. A lot of girls didn’t actually eat them and I ended up throwing out left overs. *gag*

Things that did work:

Using the Duff spray (Duff as in guy from Ace of Cakes on Food Network – he has his own line at Michael’s of decorating supplies) on cupcakes = awesome. It basically is food coloring spray paint – and i LOVE the look.

I set out stickers and crafty bits down the center of the table – as you might confetti and such. Then I set a chipboard heart at each spot (which I’d painted blue + misted with sparkly silver mist). It also had 2 holes punched in it and a wire tie thing (what do you call those? pipe cleaners? they’re in kid craft area…) so that when finished the girls could put them up on their walls. Above you see E using a Copic. I never use mine and I have blue + green ones so I let them have at ‘em. No Copic was harmed.

Mason Jar as drink = fab. NO SPILLS. I punched a trio of holes to make room for the straw (Fyi: crop a dile big bite WORKS ON MASON JAR LIDS!) I added another hole for the umbrella, and filled with each girl’s choice of drink.

Dessert bar a hit. I cut rice crispy treats (that had blue sprinkles in them) into star shapes (aka sea stars), had a big starfish shaped bowl full of sea-themed candy like life savers, gummy fish, swedish fish, gummy sharks, gummy clown fish; and then I had the cupcakes of course. It was NOT a free-for-all. Things got passed out, choices made, and baggie ‘o candy went home with each girl for later. (they just got to pick A candy. I wasn’t gonna amp them up any more than they were!)

I spent a lot of time on streamers and decorations – not that it took long to take down. I was happy to. I’m sure we’ll have many birthday and other parties in years to come, but kids are only little for a few precious years. There is a very narrow window of time, a very set number of years where they’re old enough to have theme parties like this, but not too old that they don’t want hoopla.

I am doing my best to make each one count, and to have fun with the preparations and detail. Know what? It’s really satisfying and fun – and I’m glad that it turned out as fun as she’d hoped.

Books I recommend: Jennifer Estep

I am a confessed book worm, a lover of happily ever after and great fiction. I do like some darker, grittier urban fantasy fiction too now and then and today I want to take a minute to discuss one of my top 5 ALL TIME favorite authors. An author I trust even when she has me cringing and peeking through my fingers at the page as her characters enter situations I’m not sure they can survive (but know that they must!).

I have been a fan of Jennifer Estep’s since I first stumbled across a copy of her novel Karma Girl several years ago in a bookstore. I can honestly say I’ve liked every one of her books, and many of them are all time favorites. When she left her world of Super Heroes behind for a new series that she said was going to be way more really dark, violent, and gritty… well I was nervous. A series about a female assassin known as the Spider who is a stone cold killer, runs a BBQ joint called the Pork Pit and who was orphaned as a kid? Really?

Oh yes, really. Since page one of book one I’ve been a huge fan of the series. You would think that a cold hearted killer would be a really unlikeable character but the thing is – she’s a survivor. Gin Blanco gives her loyalty to few, but she will fight to the death for those people. In her world there are vampires, dwarves, giants, and magic… yet it’s not an over the top anything is possible and some characters are invincible kind of place. I like that Gin is very grounded, I love her love of cooking.

She’s taken on a lot of big bad guys, her life has changed tremendously, and I’ve been glued to each and every page – and with the conclusion of each book I anxiously await the next. She gets her butt kicked, but she kicks even more and as you get to know her and as she lets more people into her life you can’t help but love her and root for her.

Today the newest of the Elemental Assassin series was released (By a Thread), book #6. Gin is going on a “vacation” which of course leads to super bad guys, people from her past, and drama with her sister too. I was lucky enough to get to read an advance copy (oh yes, and I cherished every page!) I can say this: if you are interested in this book series but didn’t want to read books 1-5 and instead start here, you could. The back story is covered nicely, and without spoiling the series so far I will just say that there is a new direction and focus because a villain central to books 1-5 is gone. There’s fallout over it, but anyhow yes- you could start from here. Also? It’s so far my FAVORITE book of the series. It was an amazing read – I loved every twist and surprise the author had in store.

It’s really rare for a series to get stronger and to capture my attention even more, to remain #1 on my list – but this one has. It’s far more typical that a writer falls into some ruts, the plot stalls, the stories get dull… not so with Estep! She blends in just the right amount of humor with the gritty, raw, dark world of an assassin that just wants to be retired and live a normal life. (ha ha, sorry, that ain’t happening!)

note: Jennifer Estep is also authoring a really cool young adult series about a young woman who discovers she has power (and is to be a champion for a God and kick some evil God & organization butt) called the Mythos Academy series. Filled with mythology and lots of teen angst, not to mention a story I can’t quit – it’s the only YA series I read. Book #3 comes out in a few months, I’ll be sure to talk about it here!

I’ll leave you with my recommendations for where to start with this author (if her stories appeal to you as they do me, that is!):

All of Jennifer Estep’s books are available in e-book format and most in print as well – amazon has them all here. Her website is www.jenniferestep.com and on twitter she can be found at https://twitter.com/#!/Jennifer_Estep [and she's one of those AWESOME authors who actually tweets back/replies to email. LOVE that about her!]

I hope to see many more of her books – not to mention finding out what her characters will be up to next…

Distress Markers

I’ve been getting a *LOT* of questions about distress markers, and I’m ready to share! I’ve got an article up at www.scrapbookupdate.com today, and I made a quick video to share with you here as well.

You’ll be seeing a LOT of these from me. It’s distress in tiny form. The stains gave us a bigger (Wetter) format, now we’ve got a detail/tiny one. LOVE IT!

My suggestion for buying would be to pick your personal fave color(s) of distress. The ones I use are tumbled glass, peeled paint, brushed corduroy, and faded jeans… of course also worn lipstick, frayed burlap, wild honey, scattered straw, antique linen… so many to love! The price is right too – at about $3.50 each they are the least expensive way to add distress colors to your stash.

If you’ve got more questions, feel free to ask them here. I am definitely just getting started with learning these pens, and finding new ways to use them all the time… you’ll be seeing more of them here for sure.

You can pre-order these at SimonSaysStamp.com and they’ll ship them right to you when they are in stock.

Brave

Have you seen the trailers for the upcoming Disney-Pixar movie called Brave? Oh – I really want to see this. [with or without children!]

You know I love a strong heroine – and this looks like another winner! [really, has Pixar ever let us down?!]

Now, we just need June 22 to get here…
