Studio wall: painted rainbow heart

I’m excited to share with you a look at how I put together the first project in my new studio space. When you open the door there is a wall area that is too close to the door to hang anything on (on other side of that ‘wall’ is closet that runs along that side of room), and since door is right there not like I can put any storage either. So what should I do?

I decided to use only things I had on hand, and a paint brush. And well, just have fun!

The results are better than I hoped – and I think once that ancient carpet is out and I am moved in it’ll really be something! Want to see how I did it? Here is a link to my YouTube video showing a peek at my process.

I used EVERYTHING I had on hand. Acrylic paint, white paint + spray color, stickles, puffy paint… whatever!! My goal here was to have fun and make an entryway something out of this spot. I could have used stencils and other materials to make it more “perfect”… but that’s just not me. I wanted to 100% just use paint + brush + my own hand and hand craft it. Have FUN, enjoy the process, and be ok with being a little chaotic.

I love the results – can you guess the color “theme” of the new studio?

I will be sure to share more with you soon as I’m moved in fully. Wish me luck!

Five fall crafty faves

It’s never cool and the leaves don’t turn colors – but that doesn’t mean I don’t love fall! In fact I think living somewhere that fall = slightly less hot than summer just makes me appreciate all things fall even more! So here are five crafty favorites of mine for this season:

  1. My #1 favorite right now are the candy corn stamps from Lawn Fawn! Here is an affiliate link to Scrapbook.com where you can find them. Too cute!
  2. Amber Moon is a great line by Prima – I love these colors and the designs! Perfect for fall and beyond. I am always looking for things with orange in them that I like (rare!) so this is a must for me.
  3. Free! Printables! Cathy Z is one of my favorite people and fellow fall lover. She’s got a “guide to her free October printables” HERE that you can check out and enjoy.
  4. This year I’ve fallen back in love with dotted cardstock. I can’t stop using it! Here is one by BoBunny in a particularly pumpkin-y shade of orange at scrapbook.com
  5. Finally, I’ve got to mention True Story! My all new, guest instructor and video lesson packed class starts NEXT WEEK! So be sure to check it out and join us – it’s going to be loads of fun and a really helpful class I am so proud of. Find the info here.

These are five of my fall favorites in my crafty world – how about you? Do share!!

Put in some play time

The studio is torn apart! Remain Calm. Get stuff done. Here’s a favorite post from the past I wanted to bring back…

One of the things I get asked a ton is “how do I do so much” the truth is – I don’t do 1/2 of what I’d like to do on any given day! There are a few things I have learned along the way though, so I thought I’d pause from the inky madness and share.

Work in batches. Scrambling day-of for dinner, to meet a deadline, for things needed… that’s a recipe for last minute disaster. I like to work in batches. For example, going to the grocery store if not for the week at least 3-4 days worth. While out, do a batch of errands so I’m not going out as often in general.

Own your choices. Another big thing for me- if I’m going to sit down and watch an episode of a TV show that is what I’m going to do. Blow off the end of the list and just read a book for a while? Same. The key is, whatever I do with my time I own that I’m making those choices. Whether work, play, or just catching up on things I don’t ever say “I don’t have time…” it’s more about how I’m prioritizing my time and some days I don’t make time for things.

Small steps add up. It’s true. In everything. Yes the grand cleaning of the house complete with dusting and window washing feels great! But the truth is the 5 minutes to wash and put away the breakfast dishes or the 2 minutes to start a load of laundry or the 10 minutes to tidy up my mess from the last scrapbooking session are more important. Doing little tiny ‘just a minute’ things all day long maximizes my time and helps me to avoid big ugly messes. Small choices like water not soda, or walk don’t drive add up to healthy choices, and little things creatively add up too.

You can’t work too far ahead. True story: I was going to mail my aunt’s birthday gift but I didn’t want to send it too early so I waited. Her birthday was a month ago. In the 7 weeks since I had the time and thought I totally forgot about it and when I do remember it’s never at a time when I can pack it up and take care of it. My point is: if you see an opportunity to work ahead on something – whether prepping a scrapbook album, getting a jump start on cards, or preparing for a meeting just do it. Something always comes up, there’s always a last minute something.

Make time to play. Whether it’s to go see a movie, sit for 30 minutes with a good book, or get inky. It doesn’t matter how much time or when – just make little nuggets of time just for you and just for fun. Don’t wait for the mythical free day or nothing planned opportunity. Make a little space each day.

I still have a long way on becoming a productivity master, and I’m struggling with keeping to my three item “must do” list each day… but I’ll keep working at it.

But first, a donut and some creative play…

Decor pumpkin with ScanNCut

We saw these painted textured pumpkins for a LOT of money at the store and thought… we can do our own! Then Rebecca saw this teal pumpkin and went nuts. Got to have it! It was on clearance, and everything else I already had – so this is a very budget friendly addition to our fall décor. The key to projects like this for me – and the reason I love this tool – is the ScanNCut. When I get whacky ideas like this – I know it is totally doable and I will be able to work with my supplies on hand. Continue reading “Decor pumpkin with ScanNCut”

Clean Color markers

I’ve got a quick video post to share with you today – all about Clean Color markers. I’ve got some affiliate links below to them if you are needing some. I’ve got to tell you I am saving up to purchase some more. I’ve liked them since Amazon first said “oh hey you might want…” and the price was right. A while later they became all the rage! While the hype seems to have died down I’ve got to tell you I still love mine.

They’re EASY. I can throw color down, play, blend, keep on going. No cup of water or any kind of mess needed.

They’re LASTING. I’ve yet to have one run dry and I use some of these colors  a TON.

They’re wildly BRIGHT and fun. I love some bright bold color – these deliver.

You saw them earlier this week in two different posts – for one big reason I’ve yet to mention:

They TRAVEL so well. Right now I’m working in a very limited space and having the little box with them all right there easy to go and a wealth of color possibility has been a life saver. I don’t have to drag out boxes or bins of color – just a pen and usually I hold the ones I’m using in one hand while coloring with the other.

Here’s a little video specifically about Clean Color pens.

Looking for some of your own? Ellen Hutson carries them (link) as sets OR individually. You can also find sets on Amazon. As a reminder these are the “real brush” watercolor pens – my favorite pens for quite some time now. What pens are your favorites?
