Halloween Decor: Witch hat

I have had this paper witch hat for too long, and I’m determined to USE UP stuff I’ve got… *and* I still have some Martha Stewart Halloween goodies I want to use. This added up to a fun (and surprisingly quick) little decor project…

1. Paint the hat. First I painted a thick white coat, allowing some unevenness to create texture. Then I took some orange paint and did the same, letting my brush leave stroke marks that would later add texture. Third up, black paint applied in a splotchy manner, and very thin. Finally, another coat of orange this time lightly done and not all over. I used Martha Stewart Satin craft paints and I have to say – I’m impressed. I really like the thickness and overall feel of these paints. I’ll use them in future for sure!

2. Decorate the hat! I used hotglue (as I mostly do for this type of home decor project) to apply a band (paper 3/4″ high from Martha), then glue random bits and  baubles found in the depth of my craft things closet.

3. Apply ring of liquid adhesive around the outside edge, then apply various glitters.

Simple, and so much fun. I loved putting the random bits and pieces together, and once again blending scrapbooking items with general crafting!

Now, let’s talk about what is on my fall “oh, I wish” list. Clothes…

Mulberry Scones Coat   * Pearly Bloomer Necklace   * Can’t Hardly Kate dress

and scrapbook supplies!

Studio Calico Mask  Glitz paper  * Crate “North Pole” paper!  * Tim Holtz trees

I’m enjoying reading a lot to my girls (and Miss E has been reading a lot on her own as well – which is awesome!). We just got this book – and they’re loving it. We’re fans of seasonal reads.

The girls in this story want to dress up the same – but they can’t agree and have to figure out a solution before Halloween so that they can all be ballerinas. It’s really cute and the illustrations are adorable too.

Hope you’re having a lovely week – oh how I love October! I’m off to eat some Honeycrisp apples and sip hot tea…

Stamp and Show challenge: Rustification

Simon Says… time to get crafty!

New week… new challenge!! Head over immediately (if you’ve not done so already) and visit Simon Says Stamp & Show – we’re inspired by rust/rusty junk aka “rustification” (is that even a word?!) this week! This means you can make *ANY* project with anything remotely related to rust (the color, or metal, or something rustic or..) and enter it by posting it to flickr, your blog, or whatever for a chance to win. JOIN US! The rules + post can be found over at the Stamp & Show blog. You want to enter because it is fun, plus Simon Says Stamp gives away (randomly) a $50 voucher each week to one lucky entrant!!! You can get all the details at the blog here.

For my project, I decided to do something that has been something I enjoy doing more these days – taking a super cheap (sometimes even ugly) “decoration” that I buy at a store and using my craft supplies to turn it into something that is cool, unique, and that I want on display. The advantage is that a) I can remove my cute crafty stuff and re-use if I want, b) it doesn’t take a lot of money if you’re using supplies you have on hand, and c) nobody else will have one like yours! I took a white (dense foam?) pumpkin and turned it into an aged treasure that is already up on display.

Coloring the pumpkin is easy. My trick is to layer on colors one at a time, let them dry, then try something else. Also – don’t be afraid to mix and match mediums! I started with alcohol ink on this one, then used some acrylic paints, then splattered some dylusion sprays. The colors are all listed in my supply list towards the end of this post.

Once I had my pumpkin colored, I decided I wanted to give it a bit of a ‘topper’. I’ve seen some of these (and they’re never cheap!) and I thought… a bit of paper, some leaves, some color mediums and I should be good to go! So I inked, painted, misted, and colored randomly and made a big mess. Then I took the extra leaves (all were die cut onto kraft paper) and used them to soak up the excess color… and those ended up being my favorites too.

I did let these dry for maybe five minutes, then I coated the ones I liked with Rock Candy (and let them dry) to add an aged, cracked layer to the leaves and I love the results!

Once those leaves were dry it was hotglue time! I warmed up the gun while I grabbed some rusty bits from my stash, and  stamped a banner with “fall” and prepared to assemble.

Just minutes and a bit of hot glue later – and this baby was on display!

Here are the supplies I used:

note: the linked metal rings you see (I’m pretty sure) are discontinued and by Tim Holtz. They’ve been sitting here in a drawer so long – glad to put them to use!

I wish you a fantastic week filled with seasonal crafting! Oh, and speaking of seasons… if you haven’t already be sure to check out Simon’s new limited edition holiday card kit! You can check it out + order it here.

Heidi Swapp: new layout

I hope you’ve enjoyed my look at the new Heidi Swapp products this week! I’ll be doing a couple more projects with these folders, minis, and more in a few weeks – so don’t think you’ve seen the last of me + Heidi’s scraptastic stuff!

Today I want to share a layout where I used a memory file as a paper on my page. Between the die cut edges and overall look – I LOVE using these on layouts and have ever since they came out!

supplies used:

I have found that this new line Vintage Chic is just so soft and perfect for dang near any photos – but I had to use some travel ones for this globe folder – and I thought it would be the perfect time to do a Central Park layout!

Because honestly, there are few things better than a Levain bakery roll (with Valrhona chocolate) on a cool morning in that amazingly beautiful park in spring. *sigh* As I almost never partake in bread or chocolate these days – it was fun to remember that morning and scrapbook it as well. Oh sweet bread and chocolate, how I love you…

I hope you have a fantastic weekend of crafting, exploring, and fun in general!

Heidi Swapp mini memory file book

Today I want to share a surprisingly quick & easy mini book combining Heidi Swapp mini file folders and part of a fotostack album as well.

Supplies used:

To start, I figured out which three folders I wanted to use, and which one I wanted to have as the cover. Then I stitched two pages from a ‘fotostack’ mini album (that happened to be the two pages I had left after using the rest of it on other projects!) across the cover of my cover folder.

The two folders I wanted inside my book, I stitched into the folder next. My sewing machine had no problem with this, and then to really make sure this would be solid I ran a line of glue down the center and let it dry to really seal those stitches.

With the album in place – now all I have to do is decorate the cover and fill it with photos!

Yes, the goal with this particular book is to keep it SIMPLE.  This will become a gift, and one I wanted to get created in a single craft session. I absolutely love these mini folders (about 8 1/2 x 7) – they’re such a great size and I’m going to have to get MORE for my crafting definitely. One pack won’t be enough to satisfy all the ideas I’ve got!

I especially love, as a 4×6 printed photo girl, that this makes the perfect size book for my photos without trimming them – as well as great for multiple tiny photos as well.

One tip: a big thing with me and mini books is that photos and elements sometimes want to stick to each other. Not a problem here! I just used some double sided tape and some sheets of vellum (5.5 x 8.5″) between my pages. Problem solved!

To adhere I just folded (about 1/2″) the vellum and ran double sided tape down that little folded bit and tucked it into my book as needed. Such an easy solution!

I just used photos + instaframes (LOVE THOSE!) + bits of paper and set my photos up so quickly and easily!

I really love that I was able to get this put together in a single crafting session, and I didn’t worry about getting fancy inside the book either. This project is more ‘photo album’ style – and I’m having a lot of fun making this kind of thing lately to give away or share with others.

I did play a bit more with my cover though – some ink + some accents…

and a peek inside that front flap…

I love that this album has pages on the front +  full pages inside…

I do love those rub-ons that come with the instaframes. They’re such fun.

I can’t tell you how much I *LOVE* that Heidi Swapp product from the last release goes perfectly with the new stuff! I’ve had fun using up my stash while playing with the new goodies too.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this simple book – I’ve still got more to come tomorrow with one last post in this series!

note: I’ll have more ideas coming with these folders for sure! If you’d like more inspiration right away, be sure to visit Heidi’s blog where she shares all kinds of ideas!
