I’ve had a lot of camera questions, people wanting to know what I replaced my trusty camera with, etc… so today’s post is to share that info…
I’m a Nikon girl. I’ve owned other brands, just didn’t love them as much. So, when I got my first DSLR camera, it was indeed a Nikon. A d60 in fact. My photo in the side-bar here on my blog is me with it. It’s been with me since Becca was first born… or right before she was born? Point is that it’s been a good camera for me for about 5 years.
Did I learn how to take it out of auto mode? no. HELL no. I stuck to simple. It worked well.
Then, it broke.
First I looked at replacing my D60, then realized that isn’t a current model. What is comparable now? D3200 is closest I saw of their current models. But then, two photography (and Nikon) enthusiasts my father in law and then my friend Melissa convinced me to take this as an opportunity to upgrade vs replace.
D7000 it is. Then of course – get the 18-105 or 18-200 lens?! I went with 18-200 because now? I don’t need multiple lenses for vacation. My lens will take up close OR zoom in/far away stuff pics. Luckily (?!) I had been saving up for a new lens and some other gear… so luckily I was able to get myself a new camera. I really REALLY didn’t want to resort to iPhone pics for my projects for much longer!
This new camera presents all kinds of new challenges for me. I’ve *GOT* to learn a bit about real photography stuff like what ISO means and why I want to use A mode… luckily Melissa was willing to give me a skype crash course in some basics, and I’m reluctantly and slowly on my way.
The D7000 is similar, and yet quite different from my D60. It is also a bit larger and heavier but I’m really looking forward to this new step. I’m considering it a good thing – being made to learn more and improve my photography further. I’m looking at it like an opportunity and a blessing. A chance to grow. Helping me along – I’ve got a few books to read:
Now, I’m off to photograph a BUNCH of projects – because a lack of camera = a serious backlog of things to take pictures of!! Then I’d better practice photographing the girls at soccer!
It does my heart good to hear that you DON’T know everything about your camera, and that you have been shooting in manual mode. I don’t feel quite so badly about not knowing how to use my camera OUT of manual mode, now. Thanks for sharing this revealing fact about yourself.
Congrats on the new purchase. I too just bought a new Nikon, didn’t want the size/weight/cost of a DSLR so went with a bridge, or megazoom model with a 42X optical zoom. That’s equivalent to a 24-1000mm lens – and given that I like to photograph birds makes my heart go pitter patter.
Like you, I’m needing to learn what all these automatic modes will do for me. I need a Melissa in my life, LOL!
You look so, so happy in that photo, made me smile. New camera is near the top of my list of 10 big purchases. I have a digi point and shoot that is 8 years old. My IPhone camera might have more megapixels than my Sony Cybershot. I have been eying some of the Nikons. I just do not know if I want to jump to a DSLR. Congrats on your fantastic purchase and have a blast learning all the wonderful things it will do.
Congratulations on an awesome camera! I still cling to my Canon G10 and it’s PHD mode…Press Here Dummy, LOL. But I love it and it loves me back. DH has the “real” camera and I use it occasionally but I still come back to my safety net camera. Good for you making yourself learn a bit more of what your amazing camera can do. Have fun!
And you look so good behind that Nikon!:) congrats on your new camera.
You hardly look older than in your sidebar pic May!!
Congrats re the new Nikon!
I would LOVE a new cammera with super zoom etc. but really am clueless re most photographic stuff.
Look forward to seeing some of the new pics here in your blog 🙂

Looks great May! Congrats and have fun with it!!!
Congrats on you new camera! I have new D5100! And like someone said – I also need Melissa in my life 🙂
Rock it girl!
I have the SAME camera! Got it about a year ago, maybe a little less and I love it to pieces. When “manual mode” really clicks you will never really want to go back to auto or use the flash on your camera again, unless it’s one mounted on your camera 🙂 i.e. speedlight. Can’t wait to see all of your new wonderful photos that I’m sure you will be taking!!!

I also have the book you listed on the D7000 and it’s an excellent resource. Happy picture taking!
