All week I was trying to think what our Memorial Day weekend traditions were growing up, and I really could not remember anything specific. Then, last night as I was trying to fall asleep I realized why. There was ALWAYS a major horse show that I’d be at all weekend. That was the tradition, and with any luck, I realized it would be happening less than an hour from my home!
This is a snapshot I took today of Keri- she trained in the same barn as me, and she’s doing my #1 all time favorite event- trail. The precision, fun practice, and ever changing course make this one event that I could never grow tired of doing or watching. It was so great to see her (and others from my barn) ride. I do miss the thrill of the show. The 5am wake ups, dirt, grime, sweat, smell of leather and horses… but I love that I can still visit that world now and again while living in my current adventures of life.
Less elegant- this is a horse in the barn who is BEAUTIFUL… but she wouldn’t pose. Nope. She wanted more of our carrots. I love when horses do this in the presence of treats.
and miss Rebecca. So cute. She’s wearing one of Elizabeth’s old sweaters that I’m crossing fingers I can dig up a photo of to compare…
and speaking of Miss E. She LOVES animals- especially dogs and horses. So she was in heaven all morning. I did tell her that while we could feed carrots there would be no riding. No, these are show horses and they’re here to ‘work’ and not to give rides to the likes of her. She understood for sure- and was totally happy just giving out carrots.
This is Tigo. You can see miss E is sharing her carrots. Have I mentioned horses LOVE she who holds the carrots? I used to travel with/show my horse at the same events as her. She’s still going strong and still super sweet. Her owner Dorothy offered Miss E a ride. She was so surprised, and so excited… I can still see the grin that was SO BIG I thought her chin would become detached from the rest of her face.
Overall, a good day here in the life of Flaum, and a lot of good times and memories brought back to the surface where I like them…
