This week at Simon Says Stamp & Show we are seeing stars. That is, the challenge is to be inspired by stars. Anything from a sports all-star to star punches to – well any interpretation of “star” that you’d like! Visit the blog to see all of the other creations and to enter. This week’s prize (as always) is a $50 voucher to Simon Says Stamp! The winner is randomly drawn – you can enter by posting to your blog, flickr, or other site too. See the blog for entry details and rules as ususal.
Here’s a look at my project for this week – a canvas that was truly just some experimenting that eventually went right! I started this canvas with some tissue for texture, then I added a layer of paint, and stenciling, and stamping. Then I added a ton of paste in a star shape (using a cookie cutter as a mold) but HATED the look of the raised star so I scraped off most of the paste except the edges.
Then things got interesting with just a lot of what I call creative play. I just messed around with pens, gelatos, distress paint, glitter, more pens, stamps… and eventually I liked it enough to NOT cover the whole thing with gesso and start all over, but rather I will keep it!
If you’re thinking uh May, I’d love to hear more about the actual process well on this particular one I’m sorry – but I was goofing around and paid NO attention to actual steps or what I was doing with what in what order and what caused what effect. WHOOPS! I’m usually more mindful of stuff like that but honestly this wasn’t actually a planned project – it just kinda worked out. Here is a lost of all the supplies I used:
Here’s an instagram photo I posted showing the original raised paste star, and then a glimpse of my piece in progress after I scraped most of that off.
Overall, I had such a blast with this and I worked out some techniques and methods that worked well for me. If inspired I may be doing another of these soon – I’ll be sure to write things down as I go this time!
Speaking of fun (and yes, I’m LOVING these Tim Holtz distress paints!) – and discounts – be sure to check back into my blog tomorrow. I’ve got a “distress 101” video mini-class to post – and an exclusive Simon Says Stamp discount code too!!
Happy Crafting!
Sounds like you had a fun play day. I love the finished project. One thing using gesso if you don’t like it you can always start over again. Thanks for sharing!
Isn’t it wonderful when you can just play and you love the end result and enjoy the process. Love the texture on this piece May and the offset star works beautifully. Tracy x
Very cool 8×8 canvas. Love all of the texture and splats of color. Your asymmetrical design with the star looks cool. I love the added black lines around the perimeter of the star. That really sets it apart! <3 Candy
I love it when you remind us to play. Sometimes, we get so focused on perfection that we forget this is supposed to be fun! Thanks!
I think this turned out wonderfully. Love all the textures and the stars with the black outline looks wonderful. Great sentiment too!
Sounds like you had fun with this project! I am looking forward to the distressing 101 video as I have never used any distressing inks!
Fantabulous canvas – amazing texture and wonderful shimmer!

You cracked me up about scraping off the raised star. It turned out awesome. I just pulled out my large star punch to see what I could do with it.
I love this! I’m going to get out some paints, pencils etc. and play to see if I can create something even close to resembling this art! Thanks for sharing!
That came out great May! That’s the way my canvas projects go too. No matter what the plan they always seem to take on a life of their own.
I love it when something that isn’t working becomes something that does. Thanks for including a picture of the original pasted star. I love how this turned out.
Love your canvas, May! The background is stunning with all the texture and colors. the off centre star is so pretty! Hugs, Sandra
