SC + CS

Camp Scrap is my new Big Picture class.

Studio Calico is a long time fave mfg + kit club of mine.

{put them together and…}

Studio Calico is one of the companies featured (and a prize being given away!) during my class Camp Scrap. Want to know what could make it more fun? They’re giving away a spot in class RIGHT NOW!! Go here to enter: http://studiocalico.blogspot.com/2010/05/sneak-night-giveaway.html

You can also see a sneak of their June kit. I love how they have set sneak day (9pm on 13th of month for me – it’s midnight on 14th EST though) each month and they have a party over on their website. It’s such fun. I feel like adding more fun… want to see a Studio Calico product inspired page?

I created this layout today with their grey (amazing and awesome) rub-ons, sticker letters from the Anthology collection, and a butterfly patterned paper exclusive to one of their kits back in ’09. I used my Martha Stewart big butterfly punch (worth every penny!!) and then felt like the page wasn’t quite done…

I ended up stitching around edge and adding rhinestones and pearls. This is totally a favorite trend in my scrapbooking right now!

I also love how I overlayed the woodgrain rub-on onto the photo. Is that weird to say? Oh well, I do.

Hope you have a most excellent day – and good luck if you go enter to win a spot in class!!

Where has this been all my life?

Last week I went searching for a punch Stephanie loves and I was intrigued by called Modern Garland. I did not find it at my local craft store, instead I found a store ripped to pieces and obviously getting a bunch of new stuff/re-organized by the looks of it.

I did find this…

it’s called the doily lace trim, and I just want to ask one question: where has this been all my life?!?!?

SERIOUSLY.

Some other time I’ll talk about how I love that it folds up to take up less space when it’s not in use. For now, just know it punches out the whole lovely strip of lace looking paper trim, ok and it drops a heck of a mess but DANG. It’s super cool and I am in LOVE. I’m working it into my class materials for www.scrabooku.com the class I’m doing in a few weeks for sure.

That’s my enabling post of the day, and if you’re into more vintage inspired and frilly stuff, check out this layout:

I had so much fun mixing the beautiful Websters Pages goodies with the bug painting pictures. Oh, and that ‘girl power’ stamp by Catslife Press? It’s been a fave of mine for years. I love pulling that out.

I’m anxiously awaiting new Jenni Bowlin goodies being released soon, but in the meantime I’ve still got a few butterflies and fun things to hold me over…

Creative Journey: increasing Kraft

The creative journey continues forward! If you’re just joining me, I’ve been writing a series of posts about my personal creative journey. Today, a seemingly small topic: neutral colors of paper/cardstock…

What neutral are you? I know people who don’t go anywhere without a black purse. Those who prefer shades of grey, chocolate brown, cream over white… for ‘neutrals’ there is a lot of variety and possibility.

So I ask again, what neutral are you?

I didn’t know that  I had a neutral for a long time, but once I found it, it really helped me along.

Back in 2006 or so, I finally figured out that black or white are NOT good choices for me despite them being the popular and obvious choices. Cream and kraft are my best neutrals. They work the best with the papers I lean towards, the patterns and styles I go for, in other words – they’re more ME.

Now I’m strictly talking scrapbooking here – and it’s not to say I don’t work with white. No, I’m talking more in a ‘what cardstock do I use and neutral do I feature’ sense.

(layout above from December 2005)  It was sometime in 2006 that I figured it all out, and I found that I could still use black pen for my journaling (as I still do 99% of the time), that I wasn’t limited or fenced in, that knowing my neutrals simply freed me when I wasn’t sure which way to turn.

(page above from 2005) In fact, I could print on the kraft cardstock and use it anywhere, anyhow I liked. I even discovered that “shopping bag” colored acrylic paint was a good idea. You’ll note these pages I’m sharing aren’t my “best work” – but that’s ok. Why? Well sometimes seeing what you do and don’t like when looking at past pages doesn’t take the form of ‘best’. These are the layouts that helped me find my kraft love way back in the day, and so I share them with you for that reason.

Fear of failure in my craft projects? Work past it. Working past fear is the only way to have a great time and make new discoveries.

(above, layout from 2005) No, all my pages weren’t awesome, but finding out that I lean towards those neutrals, and making more of a focused effort to reach for them has been great for me creatively.

Finding my style meant a lot of going back to finished pages and noting what I did and didn’t use and like.

The supplies you buy and like vs the supplies you USE are two totally different things. A very noteworthy difference, especially when finding your style.

Finding my own style became less about putting a label on what I am, and more about figuring out what works for me, and getting a better understanding of what *I* like.

I’ve been trying to mix up my neutrals lately (just to stir the pot and keep it interesting) but it really hasn’t happened. I’m a kraft cardstock girl. I purchase it in packs of 25, and it will remain my #1 until some other color can do all that it does. For me, it’s the perfect neutral.

(above page from 2010 CHA show – all product outside cardstock is the girls’ paperie)

note: I’m a cardstock freak. I adore it. I even made an instant download class for Big Picture about it. More on cardstock, as well as more creative journey posts to come…

Adding some fun to a package…

Sometimes I forget about my scrapbook supplies. What I mean is, I forget I can use them for good outside my albums…

Like when you don’t want to go out and buy a birthday card but would rather make a fancy tag. 5 minutes, some Martha Stewart Glitter, and a Tiana sticker or two… (as well as chipboard, patterned paper, and glue) and you’ve got a unique creation!

“More sparkle!” is what Elizabeth declared over and over again. The package and presents inside were a big hit.

I don’t like vintage inspired, I love it!

I was on Unkit Live last night (Sudie TV with Sudie Alexander) and there were some technical difficulties – Anyhow, it’s my understanding that I was on audio, but not video, but it was fun anyhow. Talking about fave vintage inspired products and such. Here’s a photo of me in studio listening to Sudie + keeping eye contact on my computer/webcam…

Jason wanted to know why I had lipstick on last night, as I never have lipstick on at home. I explained – without it my face was just pale enough that I appeared to not have lips on the webcam, it was creepy. I will have to remember this for the video chats I am doing for my next Big Picture class that starts next month. Keep lipstick near computer!

Anyhow, I did two layouts for Sudie and they’ll be posted at www.unkit.com along with some tips for working with vintage products + vintage inspired stuff. So much fun. This one is up today-

supplies:
Kaiser Craft “Devonshire” patterned papers, lace, brad, rhinestones, and pearls; www.shopevalicious.com dictionary paper button flowers; October Afternoon stickers (letters); Bella Blvd big flower; Making Memories journaling paper; American Crafts pen

The orange + aquas in this line by Kaiser Craft paper + the vintage feel = pure love from me. Did you know Kaiser Craft is a friend of Camp Scrap? That’s right – they’ll be giving away prizes (plural!) during my class. My favorite thing about the layout above has to be using the lace and making it the base for my embellishing. The strand of pearls on top is held down thanks to some dabs of liquid adhesive here and there.

This morning I’m working on a number of projects, one of which is this on the go planner/journal for our big family vacation (that doesn’t happen for six or seven months, but whatever!)  I’m playing with Tattered Angels goodies (another friend of Camp Scrap!!!) + random fun stuff on this journal/scrapbook thing I bought at Borders a few years ago.

It’s SOAKING WET, so while I wait for it to dry I’ll be working on other projects. So much to share, so much fun to have!! Hope you’re having a great week –
