Thisย is a new slice of heaven I’ve discovered. White chocolate bits + strawberries in a glazed scone… in other words heaven on earth. It’s from Panera, I’ve only had 1… and it’s going to stay that way for a while.
You see, I’m going dessert free. As you may have guessed by my blog’s title, and honestly if you’ve EVER met me in person, I’m a girl who likes my sweets. I would be happy on a macadamia nut blondie, brownie, snickerdoodle cookie, chocolate chip straight from the bag, coconut cake, caramel, and toffee diet.
Ok, so even I know the benefits to moderation and I restrain myself, but I’m a sweets girl. I know Cathy Zielske struggles with french fries – I could live without them forever and be fine. We’ve each got our own food obsessions I suppose, dessert items are mine.
So why dessert free? Well:
- My weight has been at a plateau for MONTHS (as has my jean size) and I want to get back into loss mode.
- I feel like I’m sliding back into too much sweets/too many excuses. Going without for a while could help me get that back in check.
- I think a “no dessert” period would be a unique challenge for me.
I’ve never done this. Oh, I’ve had “one tiny treat/day” or “1 dessert/week” diets… but never ZIP. My plan is to keep this going at least 2 weeks, but if I can stand it (and am not stark raving mad and snapping at everyone in sight on verge of breakdown) a month is the ultimate goal. Now I’m not going to eliminate sugar from my morning coffee, or refuse to eat pasta because the sauce has sugar or anything extreme like that – the problem isn’t sugar, it’s dessert.
I’m including the Chocolate Chip Paneraย bagel I’ve come to love as a weekly treat in my “noย can have” diet… 370cal though? Whoops. Also no beloved cupcakes. Last night J and I finished off the last of the sprinkles cupcakes. (ones shown below are sprinkles, how cute is that?)
So if you see me walking down the street with an eye twitch or snarl on my lips you know why. The chocoholic is going dessert-free forever for a little while. I’ll let you know how it goes + how I get over the creative block that is sure to follow this no dessert deal. I’m not sure carrot sticks and grapes are as much fun as Aussie licorice and chocolate chips for a snack.
*sigh*
No pity though! It’s totally self-inflicted, and should be worth it overall to help me get back into a healthier zone…
All I can say is: good luck! And, I don’t envy you… I have a bag of easter eggs in my desk at work right now, and before that was the mini eggs. Although, since my birthday I have implimented the “no sweets before noon rule” – think I’ve only slipped up once.
Making your goal public is a step in the right direction!
I sympathize and have no will power…I cave as soon as I get hungry. Just wish I was never hungry.
My weakness is soda. My New Year’s resolution was to cut back, then give it up completely. I did great in January but have fallen back into bad habits since then. So I will be rooting for you (at least you can say you’re giving up sweets rather than trying to kick a Coke habit ๐
Actually I kicked a soda habit this very way!!! I’d gotten into the habit and just went cold turkey. By the end of 2 weeks I didn’t crave it anymore, and now just enjoy one every week or so. ๐
I think it’s SO easy to fall into bad habits, and important to keep an eye on things and just feel free to kick yourself in the behind to get it back in gear. You can do it!!
May
I’m rooting for you too May! Three weeks left for the after-school program then I am going to have to join your little club ๐ By that time you will be over the witchiness, and then I’ll snarl at you! Blessings on your day-ME
Good Luck, May!
I did find a cupcake place that was worthy of a trip. I’ll not write it here nor send an e-mail about it until you are allowing yourself an occasional treat.
The problem for me is daily indulgences.
I love my carbs! Sweets, pasta, pastry, cereal, bread…
Now, some I can justify as fiber. It’s the ones with sugar and fruit and cream that do me in! Desserts are not my only problem.
Still, your plan seems doable for at least 2 weeks and I may need to try it. The real answer to most diet dilemmas is moderation. Somehow, the two bites answer is a real challenge for me!
Good for you May!!! You can do it!!! I have been slowly loosing since the first of the year!! It feels so good. I am NOT at my goal weight yet but I am going to try and go even lower!!! I have a real problem with sweets also but I have just been diligently counting calories and watching what I eat. I dont just NOT have treats but I make sure they are low calories ones like a 100 cal. small candy bar or an 80 calorie ice cream bar because then I stick with the diet plan because I feel like I am treating myself every once in a while.
Sweets are my weakness too ๐ Sigh ๐ Your “I would be happy on a macadamia nut blondie, brownie, snickerdoodle cookie, chocolate chip straight from the bag, coconut cake, caramel, and toffee diet.” diet sounds wonderful!! I do like french fries and carbs, cheese but I could give all those things up. I’m doing/done/trying Weight Watchers and I save my precious points for a sweet treat.
Good luck with your no dessert!
Marla this is what I was doing (1 small ‘treat’ each day that fit into calories I had left) BUT – I have started being sloppy and I’m sliding down the slope into not counting and therefore haven’t been loosing.
So, this is more of an ‘go extreme then relax’ solution to get me back to that place. ๐

Good luck May! It is so much easier to fall into habits than to break out of them. And even when WW teaches you new habits, it’s hard to stick to them without getting bored and longing for the old familiar ones. I wish you much luck and perseverance. Here’s a quote that may help:
Consider the postage stamp: its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there. ~Josh Billings
mmm. i’m a lover of dessert AND french fries. haha. :[
All I can say is GOOD LUCK.
I think cold turkey is the way to go. I read that having sweets makes you crave them more and I find it true for myself. I have gone no-sweets for 6 weeks now and I don’t miss it at all. I am determined to take better care of myself and fit into my summer wardrobe this year! I’m rooting for you!
I’m with you May! I’ve been trying to do the same thing. So far I’ve been pretty successful! I started with cutting soda out completely, switched to a lower sugar yogurt, lower sugar granola bar, and lower sugar orange juice (staples of my everyday diet). I stopped eating cookies and all the goodies. I’ve discovered that sugar IS my problem! I’m actually considering getting into a bathing suit this summer!! My 10 year old daughter will be thrilled to have her mom swim with her ๐ All the best to you ๐
I like snacking while scrapping. My fav is M&M’s. But I too am on a diet and no can do the M&M’s. So here is a suggestion if you too think snacks and scrapping go hand-n-hand. I’ve been snacking on Quacker oats squares. It is a cereal. I don’t think it has too much sugar in it and it is not a ‘candy’ in any sense. Just a suggestion. Good luck with the no sweets.
Linda
Good luck May!
You go girl! I have no will power at all!!!!! I love my sweets and have to have one after dinner every night thanks to my DH!! I know you can do it and just tell hubby if you get stark raising mad to shove a cupcake down your throat! ๐
You can totally do anything you set your mind to May…no doubt about that at all!
Good luck May. I’ve just been away for the weekend and need to get back to exercising!
I’m not sure I could do it! Like you, I’m a total dessert addict. Smart of you to post this though… now you have to be accountable to all of us. ๐
