Three of my favorite things come together in today’s card: rainbows, unicorns, and creating unique card designs with multiple techniques. Today I have a video tutorial to share with you (and a give-away!) featuring some Neat & Tangled products.
When it comes to rainbow I’ve noticed I enjoy playing withΒ non-traditional colors (breaking out of the standard rainbow), as well as just working with one part of the rainbow is my personal favorite. I’ve also found playing with watercolors and creating ombre effects and more variation with fewer colors is a real favorite too. While pink is my go-to I challenged myself to step outside the usual for today’s card.
The mane & tail of this unicorn as well as the background technique used are among my favorites right now. I will never grow tired of spraying color onto paste! Want more details? I filmed the process of making this (4 1/4 x 5 1/2 folded) card and created this YouTube video to share with you for a full tutorial.
Supplies Used (links to EllenHutson.com unless otherwise noted):
Unicorn stamp and coordinating dies, stencil (geometric blooms), watercolor paper, gold watercolor, black archival ink, light and fluffy embossing paste (scrapbook.com), Nuvo crystal glaze (link to scrapbook.com), Prima water brush (scrapbook.com), and assorted color mediums (distress ink, clean color, distress spray, prima color spray)
Challenge: Let the rainbow inspire you in some way today! Whether you go for a 2-3 color ombre party or make use of all the colors or are inspired by my card in some way I hope you’re inspired to play.
Tips inspired by my card:Β
- use a light paste for cards
- work in pieces/batches so if you “ruin” something it’s merely one part of the project
- these techniques will work across the paper crafting spectrum – try them on anything!
- you can always add more color
- don’t be afraid of little whoopsies. It’s hand crafted, not perfection! Enjoy the process!!
I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s project but don’t run off just yet- you’ll want to leave a comment on this post for sure…
Give-away:
Neat & Tangled generously sent a bunch of fun stuff for me to share with one of you! If you’d like to win some stamps, sequins, and stencils (LOOOOVE all of the above!) leave a comment on this post by July 1, 2017 to be entered for your chance to win. The winner will be drawn at random and posted on a round-up post on the 2nd of July. Thank you to Neat & Tangled for supporting Camp Scrap! Be sure to check out their awesome blog for more card making inspiration and fun.
What fun prizes from Neat & tangled .
Love your take on the rainbow , certainly frees up the space to color when you don’t have to use the entire spectrum!!
I like the idea of working on the pieces of the cards card in batches so that if you ruin something you only have to replace the sentiment or the card base instead of the whole project. It is so great to be able to learn new tricks from other card makers. Thanks Neat and tangled for the chance to win!
I like the idea of doing the ombre effect on the cards. As someone just starting out on making cards, I am seeing so very many cool ideas to try. i love watching the youtube videos of the various card people to see how to do the new tips and tricks like this one. i would love to win these from neat and tangled. thanks.
Really like the untraditional colour you used for your unicorn. It’s nice to see a non-traditional rainbow : )
Thanks for organizing “Camp scrap”. It’s very motivating and fun to have some prompts.
These neat & tangled supplies are darling. Thanks Neat & tangled!
I love using rainbows on my cards. promised my mom I wouldn’t watch any of the videos until she gets back from holiday.
May your card is SO pretty!! I am now thinking of what I want to do. I have some really colorful pics from St martin and St Thomas that would be perfect for a colorful layout. I have those out on my desk. Ok off to get busy!
I have a little imperfection on everything I make! lol This card is adorable. Love the ombre and I have been doing that in my Travelers notebook!
I TOO LOVE WORKING WITH PASTE BUT i USUALLY USE IT ON sCRAPBOOK PAGES. Your post and card today have inspired me to add it into my card making! THanks!

SO pretty and cute! Love the background and the unicorn is adorable!!
thanks so much for the video! I love the card! I think I’d better go find my paste…
I like your recommendation of using a light paste on your card. Ive had this problem in the past with heaviness and taking forever to dry. My problem is I’m such a perfectionist and I need to overcome this because I can drive myself crazy when creating!
I love the stencil texture as the background. A new technique for me to try.!
I woke up today with a card design in my head using watercolors then saw today’s camp Scrap inspiration ! Thanks May!
I love the color combination on the card — I’m a big fan of cool colors — and I really like that geometric stencil! I’ve got some summer birthday cards to make, so this gives me some good ideas. Happy Tuesday, May! π
Thanks for the batch tip. it is helpful since my plan yesterday is to make a bunch of cards. Thanks also for hosting Camp Scrap.
I love your card and all the helpful tips in the video. The stencil technique is my favorite. I’ve added color to paste before applying it with a stencil, but never used your spray technique. I can’t wait to try it!
That unicorn is so cute! I love the effect of the watercolors on her mane! Rainbow colors are always so fun and I look forward to throwing some fun colors together on my next layout!

Love your “rainbow” and the effect of the mist over paste such a fun technique. Neat & tangled stuff is awesome! especially that stencil
Love your card! It seems like I can’t do much these days without using a rainbow of colors. I keep telling myself that I don’t have to color every page in my Inspire Bible in rainbow order, but I keep doing it!
Hi May,
I love your card today. Love the partial-rainbow effect and who doesn’t love unicorns. The neat & tangled prize package is lovely! I also want to thank you for offering camp scrap for free!

Rainbows are so fun & when you see a real one- everyone points it out. I’m loving the background you did for the unicorn, kind of a stained glass look. Now I want to get my inks out and play….
I just tried the light and fluffy paste and really liked it. I also just heard of Neat and tangled and keep seeing things I need .

What a great unicorn stamp – my daughter would love to find that in my stash

I am drooling over those sequins!! Loveeeeee
Made some cards tonight, I made 2 using a mask and pastes. So love your idea of spritz I guess on the color while the mask is still in place! Lol I used to take it off in the past and then go back and try to color the different parts…. this was soooooo much better!!!
That card is so cute! Thanks for the reminder of the stencil background technique with the modeling paste. I need to give that a try. What an awesome giveaway! Thanks!

This card is gorgeous! I love all the color…very magical.
i REALLY LIKE THIS TECHNIQUE! I used a “paper” stencil though and had some bleedthrough with my stencil. It’s all good though and won’t end up being a big deal. I’m patiently waiting for it to dry.
The unicorn is adorable!
WOW! What an adorable card!! so magical!!!!
I’ve Scrapbooked for years but only recently gotten into cards. I love seeing your cards because they are thing I would just not think of. So inspiring!
I had not thought of sprays for the paste – will give that a go this week. Now that the heat is a little less today, maybe I can venture out into the garage (aka studio). Love the idea of a rainbow in a limited color palette.
This is such a cute card! My daughter loved watching the video with me, and we both think the unicorn is awesome. Watching you work with paste makes me really want to try it sometime!! Thanks for the inspiration and for the giveaway opportunity!

That unicorn couldn’t be cuter and I love, love, loved the ombre effect. Thanks so much for the fun giveaway with all my favorite things! I have a 6 year old and 3 year old who would go nuts over this unicorn card…and the adorable giveaway stamp.
Your card background is so unique and beautiful! I like your take on rainbow colors, and this fresh cool blue and green ombre look is perfect for a magical feel. This inspires me to pull out my stencils and get creative for a change! Thanks for the chance to win some sweet crafty goodies.
Sweet card with lots of great techniques!
I have thought about venturing into textured paste but haven’t yet taken the plunge! This idea of using a stencil and rainbow colours as the background looks great.
I love the look of water coloring but haven’t done much of it . After seeing your beautiful ombre technique though, I can’t wait to give it a try. The textured paste and stencil background is also gorgeous but not something I feel like I can tackle quite yet! Thanks for the technique tips and inspiration, and chance to win this prize

What a great card. I love the colors, and even though I’m not much for unicorns, that one is super cute! π Thanks for the inspiration.
One of the things I have always admired/envied is your spirit of adventure when you create. You are never afraid to try something because you might not do it right. I love how you can just play and have fun. It is hard for me to let go.
Such a pretty card! Who doesn’t love unicorns?
I’ve never used embossing paste and stencils, but you certainly do make it look like fun! Eager to try it! Thanks for the video!
