new layout | Amy Tangerine Sketchbook

If you switch the first two letters in May you get… Amy!

Kind of geeky of me to notice perhaps, but I couldn’t resist scrapbooking a photo of myself + Amy Tan at CHA taken in front of her new line Sketchbook, with that same line!

Just a squirt of pink mist, a bit of a daybook (I tore out the mat that is under my photos from a daybook – they’re great whole or in pieces!), and some accents later and I had myself a super fast layout.

I’m excited with how FANTASTIC this line is to work with for my photos – you’ll be seeing loads with it from me in the future for sure. Also? Totally blendable with her first line (a few elements here are from that).

I’m going to make a new “me” album (I do this for layouts that have nothing to do with the rest of my family) – this one is going to be CHA/scrapbook event related I’m betting I get 2 years or so worked into it. Looking forward to more scrapbook friends, adventures, and good times in 2012…

Thinking travel…

April is more than 1/2 gone, can you believe it?!

This has me thinking travel. A lot of local store events, a lot of personal travel, even a trip to Ranger Ink Headquarters in New Jersey are all coming over the next few weeks and months…

all this travel has me thinking about scrapbook supplies like these:

Great lines are plentiful – and what I’m noticing is that travel ‘themed’ lines are really not specific anymore. There is a lot of generic maps, compasses, words and phrases that could be applied to life in general, and very easy to use back-sides of patterned papers.

Heidi Swapp, Studio Calico, and Tim Holtz are definitely topping my shopping list. Other items/brands I’ve found myself picking up for general travel goodness are from Bazzill (Janet Hopkin’s Wayfarer line), Glitz Designs, Basic Grey, and more Amy Tangerine.

I happen to be working on a number of past travel related layouts, and with two all new big on-line classes coming up soon, not to mention the upcoming travels, well I can justify (self-enable) stocking up.

I wonder – when you scrapbook your travels do you ever buy stuff ahead as I am? Do you wait until after? A combination?

Since I often use non-travel product on my travel layouts, and I try to purchase only travel related stuff I know I can use for multiple projects, I do a little of both.

Do you have a favorite travel line right now? Tips for scrapbooking on the road? I’d love to hear. I have two upcoming trips I believe I’ll be taking a small crafting kit on… I’m in brainstorm mode on that…

Enabler note: Studio Calico has their abroad line for sale here in their shop. There’s lots of goodies including USA states die cuts, garlands, and more.

Operation Clean Studio | Depth

Today we’re going to talk shallow and deep. Wide and narrow.

I’m talking about what I store my supplies in, and the why of it. The bottom line, is this:

Whatever I have my supplies in has to be logical. It has to fit my space, budget, and my needs as a crafter. But most importantly, it has to be simple. If I am storing something too far out of sight, make it difficult to find something or to put it back, the place and my organizational system won’t work. I won’t use it. Chaos will take over.

For each person this is going to be different. Depending on what you have, what you use, and how you craft your choices will be different than mine. But for the sake of sharing my own experience and offering tips for what is working here in my studio, here are some actual examples.

Punches. Oh punches. You aren’t ever easy to store – but I am ok with having a box or bin of punches. However – if I have to dig, if I have to dump my punches out just to find the one I want, this is no good. It is for this reason that my paper punches have relocated to a shallow drawer where they are no more than 2 punches deep.

I’m not including border punches in that – they’re on a shelf in a small plastic bin. Why? Because if I’m wanting a circle or a butterfly or a star, I’m not grabbing my border punches. While they both do the same job, shape punches and border punches serve entirely separate functions and as such can be separated.

You can split stuff up based on how you use it.

The key reason that my hardware store purchased set of drawers has always worked for me is NOT because the little drawers are perfect sizes for storing small embellishments.

No. The reason they work is that they’re shallow enough, AND they come completely out. I can pop a drawer out so that I have the purple buttons right at my desk as needed. I can pull the entire drawer of brads out and find what I need. More importantly – I can put them back in less than a second – just pop it back in.

Quick. Easy to use. Intuitive.

The five-cubbies long little shelf you see above I purchased on clearance at a home improvement store. Meant as a kitchen cabinet add on- it reminded me to look outside of the crafting realm for ideas. We’ll talk more about shopping another day. I want to say that I noted that it’s deep enough for any sticker sheet, and while it’s not tall enough for all of them, all my more narrow stickers, border strips, and rub-ons fit perfectly and are easy to flip through stored here.

SSS May Kit

The new SSS card kit is out. Oh my. Look at all that lovely light blue + red + cream… and a touch of grey? OH yes. this I REALLY like…

And me being me… well…

I sat down to make a card and made a layout instead. A layout that took longer than my usual, puts to use the 6×6 paper in the kit, and that I’ve been meaning to make since February when this happened.

I’m glad to have gotten the details down, and had creative fun while doing it.

I used a circle die cut, some ink, and some old red letter stickers for my title, everything else is from the kit. All the banners, hearts – that’s all just kit paper cut up. The border on the far left is just 2 strips of the same paper lined up and overlapped so that it looks like one longer piece. Look close enough you can see where the edge is.

Miss E is fine now, by the way. She had a really scary bug and they had her under observation for 4+ days until the fever stopped being an issue and lab tests were all cleared. On the second to last day we got the visit from this super sweet therapy dog – and of course I took photos (E asked me to). It was amazing how her color, mood, and energies improved during and after the visit. AMAZING.

Some of the stamps (the one above says “the very best” I just used part of it) were perfect for this page too. The colors really worked out well for what I wanted on the page as well and using bits & pieces (6×6) worked out great as well.

Overall another really fun & easy to use card kit from my friends at Simon Says Stamp!

Right now, (shhh, don’t tell) I’m working on a fall class for Big Picture Classes and it’s got a lot to do with kits and using them… so I’m enjoying some kit play myself. Hmm…. what will I make next? Stay tuned. Some big announcements coming very soon…

Balzer Designs Blog Hop | Lotus Blossom Stencil

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is back with new stencils (that I am loving, of course) and she’s asked me to take part in a blog hop featuring the Lotus Blossom stencil that she designed for The Crafter’s Workshop.

First, I created this card which utilizes all four of the stencil designs + a Jillibean Soup wooden accent.

Here is a video showing how I utilize the (12″) stencil:

What I like about this stencil is that you can layer it, use part of it, create a dimensional flower, and really do so much with it! I used a pink + navy + gold color palette with mine because I’m just SO into those colors together right now. LOVE! Here is the layout I made with it – I felt like this flower design would be fabulous with my Hawaii photos:

I added in some stickers & the puffy flower word (that are older/no longer available that I can find) – and very little else was needed! Love when I can use paint + stencils + other color mediums as the main accent on my page!

I completed my page with some glossy accents to accent my flowers (hard to see in pics – but it adds a bit of accent). More importantly – it was just a whole lot of fun to play with!!
