party recap:

Just me & 10 girls under the sea.  I did some craftiness, some things worked better than others. What didn’t work/what I learned:

To do that “use plastic table cloths in place of streamers” thing I showed in my last pinterest post is VERY cool… only if you have the right size of space. Mine? Didn’t work. Wrong size room, too high ceilings in one, too narrow for 1/2 a table cloth but too long for a full… So! Streamers it was.

The blue jello with fish candy in it was a big hit. I did it in tiny plastic cups (disposable “appetizer” cups from party store). ONE PROBLEM: Don’t put candy fish in the jello when you make the jello, or even any significant amount of time before you serve. Jello needs to be set (or fish just sink to bottom and look, well, dead). Also? Too long in the jell0 and the fish.. well… they start to dissolve into it. and the texture + color is GROSS!!! Like decaying fish. SO… yeah. A lot of girls didn’t actually eat them and I ended up throwing out left overs. *gag*

Things that did work:

Using the Duff spray (Duff as in guy from Ace of Cakes on Food Network – he has his own line at Michael’s of decorating supplies) on cupcakes = awesome. It basically is food coloring spray paint – and i LOVE the look.

I set out stickers and crafty bits down the center of the table – as you might confetti and such. Then I set a chipboard heart at each spot (which I’d painted blue + misted with sparkly silver mist). It also had 2 holes punched in it and a wire tie thing (what do you call those? pipe cleaners? they’re in kid craft area…) so that when finished the girls could put them up on their walls. Above you see E using a Copic. I never use mine and I have blue + green ones so I let them have at ‘em. No Copic was harmed.

Mason Jar as drink = fab. NO SPILLS. I punched a trio of holes to make room for the straw (Fyi: crop a dile big bite WORKS ON MASON JAR LIDS!) I added another hole for the umbrella, and filled with each girl’s choice of drink.

Dessert bar a hit. I cut rice crispy treats (that had blue sprinkles in them) into star shapes (aka sea stars), had a big starfish shaped bowl full of sea-themed candy like life savers, gummy fish, swedish fish, gummy sharks, gummy clown fish; and then I had the cupcakes of course. It was NOT a free-for-all. Things got passed out, choices made, and baggie ‘o candy went home with each girl for later. (they just got to pick A candy. I wasn’t gonna amp them up any more than they were!)

I spent a lot of time on streamers and decorations – not that it took long to take down. I was happy to. I’m sure we’ll have many birthday and other parties in years to come, but kids are only little for a few precious years. There is a very narrow window of time, a very set number of years where they’re old enough to have theme parties like this, but not too old that they don’t want hoopla.

I am doing my best to make each one count, and to have fun with the preparations and detail. Know what? It’s really satisfying and fun – and I’m glad that it turned out as fun as she’d hoped.

Brave

Have you seen the trailers for the upcoming Disney-Pixar movie called Brave? Oh – I really want to see this. [with or without children!]

You know I love a strong heroine – and this looks like another winner! [really, has Pixar ever let us down?!]

Now, we just need June 22 to get here…

13 on 13th

1. Book:  Finally got around to reading Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt. Eh. Wasn’t as captivating as I’d hoped, but really cool idea.

2. Secret: I can’t tell you what I’m doing here, secretly. But I can tell you it relates to a person. and new stuff.

3. True confession:  I ate mostly coca cola and dessert and Keurig beverages today. (and an activa yogurt, 3 ribs, and 1/2 a bagel). Not my best health day. But it was an incredibly productive one fueled by sugar and chocolate.

4.  random movie trivia:  I’ve never watched Avatar, Titanic, or Matrix. Also strongly dislike movie the Notebook.

5. Maui restaurants we loved: Mama’s Fish House, Kimo’s, Hula Grill, Tropica, and Leilani’s. Though EVERY meal we had was great, and J + I stuck to a “kalua pork or fish” entree diet the whole trip. #awesome

6. The gym is super crowded and this bothers me greatly. Upside? By Valentine’s Day 95% of newbies will be gone. So if your resolution is to work out – make it stick!! be the 5%!!!

7. I’m dying over the sneak peeks I’ve seen from Jenni Bowlin, My Minds Eye, Jillibean Soup, Pink Paislee, and several others. VERY excited to be going to CHA this year. For sneak peek awesomeness, check out www.scrapbookupdate.com ‘s page – they are the best!

8. Football weekend is coming. This means J will be cooking us great food, we’ll share a Buffalo Wild Wings sampler plate here at home, and I will be able to chill + work a lot. Looking forward to it.

9. FREAK OUT. I went in for some CHA assignment supplies and Michael’s was all decked out with spring holiday stuff. Easter and pastels and… well I broke into a sweat. My January is INSANE. If I look up, look at big picture and what’s ahead I’ll freak. Head down, pretending I didn’t see all that stuff.

10. I believe in 8+hrs sleep and lots of water. Despite today’s hideous diet, water is what I generally drink. I drink it lots, I exercise, I get plenty of rest. This is my big life secret.

11. I’m not fashion. My youngest is horrified by my wardrobe now that we’re back home and I’m working. Gym pants + sweatshirts are so NOT fashion. Why am I not wearing any cute summer dresses?

12. Maui Muffins – I had one every day of vacation, I miss them. Breakfast isn’t the same without them. they had carrots, coconut, macadamia, apple… they were amazing.

13. Adding in a party: I thought it’d be fun to have a “week 6: half way there!” party in my Big Picture class. So I’m adding that in. Bonus content galore, I think you’er gonna love it. *AND* I’m gonna come up with coordinating blog content.

Rookie Year [award idea]

Today ends my rookie season as team soccer mom [oh, and Elizabeth's as a soccer team rookie!] with a pizza party and awards for the girls. It was the coach’s idea to give them a photo (Framed), and this is what I came up with:

In Photoshop Elements I edited each photo. I sized it to 4×6 and “reverse black & white” tooled the photo which means I selected the girl + soccer ball, then de-saturated the color on the rest of the photo to about 30-40%. This made the girl pop - and really become the star!

Then I opened a new 5×7 document and drew a bunch of scratchy lines all over the file background (with brushes). Then I added the photo (4×6), added a ‘scratched edges’ .png that would add grunge around the layers, and added a drop shadow to help that picture “pop” from it’s mat. Finally I used a Varsity font to write out the girl’s name. To add pop to that – I just used my paint bucket tool to add green to the previously transparent thin outline around the letters.

Re-creating for each girl was easy – just the photo + text had to be redone. The other layers I left exactly as-is in that 5×7 document. The hardest part? Searching through photos from 10 games to find a good action shot of each girl – facing me. That took a LONG time.

I had visions of adding their number, maybe decking out that plain black frame more… but I just can’t bring myself to do it. I like it simple. and really – sometimes simple IS best. My work here is done, and it was fun to use my digital scrapbook skills for good in my motherly duties.

I’m retiring my soccer mom chair and being totally ok with my Wednesdays and Saturdays being freed up. For now…

Sports photos

I am not a sports fan, but as a girl with a healthy competitive streak and a love of snapping pictures I’ve found that I *do* enjoy games and taking action shots. That said kid sports = entirely different from snapping photos at a professional baseball or football game!! This is my rookie year as a soccer mom, and as such I’ve been really enjoying taking photos of the team.

After the games I sit Elizabeth down and we talk about the things she did great (and the things we’re going to work on) and love looking at them all. In doing this for five weeks now, I’ve found some things that I thought I would share with you today.

  • shots that show all the action/players on the field are boring. Take a few, fine, but spend time zooming in and focusing on individuals and interesting angles.
  • Get down! I get a good workout in squatting for most of the game. Putting myself lower to the ground gets me more on eye level with these girls (probably not as big of a deal with older kids)
  • Move! I walk all around the areas I can, careful to stay behind other parents and well out of the coaches and players way but still moving and getting different perspectives

  • Snap in bursts! I like to snap about 4-6 at a time quick as I can – this gets me some interesting stuff for sure – and sometimes sets up a great sequence.
  • Play with focus. I really like to get as micro of a focus as I can – I much prefer a very sharp subject and very blurred background when I can. That said – be careful that with each shot you make sure your subject is the focus!! I’ve had some great shots ruined because I wasn’t checking!
  • Auto mode is where I live. Oh, I’ve played with some manual stuff and even the ‘sport’ mode, I find I get better photos on straight auto.

Share! So far I’m the only one on the team sharing (also only one with camera attached to head during all games) – but I know it’s appreciated. We have a private team site where we can share photos, and order prints as well. Speaking of team – I crop or ‘blur’ other kids faces if I’m posting photos online.

My final thought is to think about what photos you save, treasure, and love and focus on taking those kinds of pictures. Don’t worry about capturing a complete detailing of the game, or every single time your player gets the ball. Sometimes when they do NOT have the ball is a great time to take their photo!

do you have tips to share? Ideas and things that you really like to do/use when photographing kid sports? Please feel free to share!

I will share one more thing – and that is that I totally recommend Bella Blvd “Making the Team” for a themed sports craft projects. It manages to be specific and more all-purpose all at the same time! Scrapbook.com has most of the line. (below is the soccer paper + their logos) – I just LOVE it!!

The pre-holiday prep.

Think I’m nuts for already planning for Christmas on October 1? Think again! There are a few reasons my way rules:

  • More time, less stress. [on budget planning, finding perfect gifts, your schedule]
  • better selection and options
  • spend December quietly relaxing while others run around in crowds at mall

It’s AWESOME to me, and it is that time where I start plotting. I LOVE that I spend December relaxing, crafting and gift wrapping, and generally avoiding stores. So today I thought I would share some hot/top picks turning up at the Flaum house so far this year:

This soccer playing barbie = Elizabeth’s top pick. Santa already has one in her workshop… this toy? gonna disappear – in fact it’s already impossible to find around here!

I just spotted this while surfing Williams Sonoma… um… YES PLEASE. I always ask Santa for stuff like this from them – this is  brownie + cookie “Brookie”… and I need to bake them asap. Yes, these look worth the calories!!

I was SO excited to see a new Fancy Nancy book coming out – my girls are HUGE fans (all fancy little girls would LOVE any of her stuff!) - unfortunately it’s not releasing until early February. I am thinking about sending my niece a fancy box filled with treats (chocolate, necklace, accessories…) + a picture of this and a note that she will be getting a special delivery about a month after Christmas…  Amazon has pre-order available so that’s a plus!

Ok, so speaking of pre-order…

Have you seen the new Kindle available for pre-order? It’s looking awfully cool – maybe one of the hot gifts of Christmas 2011? Ok, definitely. I see the basic kindle is just $79 right now… that’s tempting too! While I am not big on e-books (most are just as expensive as paper! I’d rather have paper version!) there are sometimes good deals, and am wondering if MAYBE I want to reconsider…

Know what I wish? I knew a kid I could give this to. I don’t think my girls would play with it enough, but isn’t it awesome?

and how about the awesome mercury glass stuff that Pottery Barn has going on? I always think I’m going to gift shop there… I never actually do. Why is that? Oh well, it’s fun to look.

So, are you like me and looking early? Or do you wait until the last minute? Have you seen anything great (link a girl up!) or so far feeling uninspired?

Also? When is too soon to post my Christmas planner project photos? Do you want to see them now? Want me to wait another month?

Christmas – from gifts to baking to just spending time with family – is so my FAVORITE. Can you tell?
