BEST ever broccoli salad

This is an amazing thing – Rebecca (aka hater of all things not dairy or bread or fruit) will eat this. happily. In fact – everyone seems to love it (except Elizabeth)! It’s a broccoli salad recipe I got from a friend – she served it at a party and yum. Also? easy. I made it this past weekend and it was a hit.

First: chop up some broccoli into bite-size pieces. Then place in pot with a bit of water in it (over strainer – so it’s not sitting IN water) and turn on heat high like you would normally cook it. *but* you only want to cook it until it turns bright green/just starts to get tender. Pour it out into colander & rinse with cool water/drain well.

Dressing is 1 cup mayo + 1/4 cup sugar + pinch salt + pinch pepper + 2tbsp red wine vinegar. Mix it up.  (note: i made about 1/2 or 2/3 this amount – it’ll depend on the quantity of broccoli salad you’re making!) Then pour w/broccoli in a nice big bowl.

What to add now? Add in some diced red onion, dried cranberries and candied/glazed nuts (pecans is what I used), also some chopped up bacon and some finely shredded cheese. How much depends on you – and the size of your salad. I went LIGHT on the onion this time because of how many kids were at our place. Most ingredients I used about 1/2 – 3/4 a cup. Really just added until it felt right – there’s no wrong amount here.

The result, is made of awesome. It’s sweet, it’s fresh, and it will keep in the fridge for a few days too.

Perfect for summer, parties, and SO good.

I’m all for girls. Girl power. kick ass girls. creative girls. encouraging girls to become women that are made of awesome.

So today I was really inspired by Shimelle’s post.

I’ll be back later tonight with another post + recipe…

4×6 photo love.

If you know me at all, you know I’m all about the 4×6 printed photos. They’re my go-to, they’re featured on 98% of my layouts. Today Shimelle unveiled the 5th installment of her “4×6 photo love” free class at 2peas, and I’m one of the contributors.

First off: grey. Who knew? It’s the first time on record that I’ve used grey as a background and I love it! The sketch is a simple one – and I had a real good time mixing all that Pink Paislee paper in with other bits & pieces.

The ‘characters’ in the title was made by setting down Girls’ Paperie chipboard letters and misting (studio calico white + TA glimmer mist in blue) over them. Then I took the letters off, scribbled outline in black pen, and that’s it! The chipboard letters are back in my box to be re-used, and I love the sketchy effect.

Be sure to drop in at Shimelle’s blog to get all kinds of linkage + see all the layouts and her video too.

Layout secret: part 1

Once upon a time there was a scrapbooker. Let’s call her May. She loved making layouts but was notoriously bad about ever putting them in albums.

At first it was in part because albums ate up her budget. But after a while it became habit. Years went by and she kept stacks of unsorted layouts. It became scary.

Then one day she had to clean out the cabinet where most were held… And now that the pages are out she knows she must get them in albums.

The layouts she does have in albums get looked at and the family loves them. Now that the girls are older, the albums are safe being put out onto the bookshelves and that is inspiring too.

Stay tuned…

damask geekery.

If you know me at all, you know I’m a damask freak. LOVE IT. So when random unknown phone # texted me damask photos this afternoon… I was like… hmm.

LOVE what I’m seeing…

but WHO is this, and how do they know my weakness for damask?!

a minute later another text cam through, revealing that it was my tattoo artist. he’s finally got my design ready to go…

that’s only a tiny sneak. The sketch (img on left) in full? Best damask pattern EVER! Getting it on my shoulder… have been wanting this for years.

To keep this crafty relevant, here are some of my favorite damask things:

Girls paperie patterned paper:

Tim Holtz damask stamp:

Pink Paislee (Ho3) Parisian Anthology paper…

Katie Pertiet’s damask series of digi papers (this is my fave set):

my love also extends to decor & home stuff…

(I think you get the picture…)

What is your favorite design or element? Do you have a signature pattern?
