As I sat in my comfortable chair, eyes glazed over and body utterly exhausted I wondered why. WHY did I go to so much trouble and work so hard that I literally was exhausted from it? Then Miss E climbed up onto my lap and gave me a big ‘ol kiss and said “that was the best party ever. Even better than in my dreams.” She was so happy, so satisfied…

A warmer, fuzzier feeling I could not have now.
So even though *I* know that all the details I meant to include weren’t there, that a few things didn’t go quite as planned, and I didn’t have all the decor I had originally wanted… the party was a hit.
All but 2 of the girls from E’s kindergarten class descended upon my house this afternoon to celebrate a very special girl turning 6. Her first “my friends” birthday party, and I will share my ideas, tips, and details with you:

Take a few minutes and get some details going. Oh I’m not winning any crafty awards for my gift bags – but I added a bit of flair (and some die cuts + a doily) to the goodie bags that the girls would take home. While they all essentially had the same stuff inside, I felt like the personalization was a nice touch and Elizabeth enjoyed handing each girl THEIR bag and saying thanks for coming as they left.

Elizabeth wanted Cake Pops (I purchased them from a local business – Just Cakin’ It) and I couldn’t have been happier that cake cutting and serving was not in the plans. It streamlined the whole operation! So I made them the centerpiece of the aqua & pink dessert table. I would have loved to buy fancy containers and such to really display stuff… but I don’t have it on hand & breaking bank wasn’t goal!! So I made what I had work. We got gummy candies, marshmallows (found at Cost plus), candy dipped oreos with Hello Kitty (sugar) decor on top… just fun little things. To cut the sugar content, we also had pretzel rods and (homemade) popcorn.
They ate loads of popcorn – perfect since that was a) cheapest and b) plentiful not to mention c) probably the healthiest option available!

I will confess – I had too much sugar on the table. Rather than freak out or overload kids at that point, I just didn’t offer some things to them, and instead “bagged to go” a few jelly beans, gummies, and the dipped oreos for each girl. That way they still got to sample everything – but they didn’t get sick or wired at my place.

We did craft projects (a bead on stretchy string bracelet), decorated a chipboard-ish butterfly, and there was a fun foam bear to decorate too. Just fun. easy. no chance of glitter or glue on the carpet crafty session. Each girl had her own spot + “kit” ready to play labeled with a name tag. The name tag gave them a personalized spot, and gave them a spot to put food, drink, and finished projects so they knew what was theirs.

Down the middle I sprinkled pink “diamonds” (just jewels from the craft store picked up for some random project I’m sure I intended to use them for at some previous time!) I also got a couple of bunches of cheap little flowers at the grocery store and used florist foam + beloved tea cups to make little arrangements down the center a few days in advance. EASY. FAST. CHEAP.

What is simply impossible to show is all the crepe paper streamers. I had them off the stairs, coming from above the front door… the whole of my living room and entry way is a maze of streamers. Not terribly time-consuming, and had to be done last night (as streamers dont hold shape/tend to fall after a day or two) but very budget friendly, simple, and quite an effect.

So tired as I am now, neglected as this blog has been for the past week, I find myself quite satisfied with the day’s events. I stretched some new-to-me crafty muscles and the experience gives me loads of ideas for future years. Ok and I’m going to fully admit that the decorating portion? I had a BLAST with music cranked way up putting the streamers up and such. I totally got into the spirit of things.

Now I just have to convince E that I *need* her new tea party barbie. seriously. Never have I seen such a “May needs this” doll. Unfortunately for mommy, E feels the same and was blown away by the sweet presents her friends gave her. Though she was more into them just being here and having fun – it was a nice bonus for her.
I have no doubt there will be future parties. Both girls have their themes picked out for their next birthdays already…
maybe i should start right now… well… after a long night of sleep…
This is my layout with the Girls’ Paperie Jubilee line (for CHA)…

I so ADORE this paper – and I really wanted to show off as much of it as I could so I made pinwheels with the portion of the paper that would have just been under the photo. (Cut it out, used cardstock instead to back that area. I do this often when I’ve got just one sheet of a pretty paper and I want to make it last!

I also cut out and placed on foam dots some triangles of paper (below) to add dimension to some of the layout. Wherever I did this, I also added a jeweled brad in the middle to tie it all together.

Then a few cool new girls paperie embellishments, a bit of stamping…

…and I had my layout. I added some yellow stickles to the photo frame, and some thread around it too (just to add support and stability since I’d cut such a hole in the background).

Just looking at this layout has me all excited to play more with these lines when they release next month, and to get working on class projects that incorporate some of these ideas too. Happy Wednesday!

so… whoops. It’s Tuesday already?!
I’ve been button sorting. reading. preparing for a BIG birthday (Miss E). working. writing. more working. preparing for some classes & trips coming up. more work. cleaning.
but I’m here.
and I’m having a mostly good time.
I’m sharing another project from CHA created for Tim Holtz…

I found that the new black plastic letters can be topped with stickles (shown above). I also coated with Glossy Accents so that it really had a good seal. But truly one of my FAVORITE items had to be the tiny hangers. On this example (below) I folded a piece of cardstock (like a towel) around the bottom bit and inked the edges for a more aged look. I also added one of the new pen nibs – love those too, and the bottom is die-cut with one of Tim’s dies.

I guess what I’m trying to say, is that this layout was pure, 100% creative play. SO FUN. I decided to try and see if I could work in one of my girliest photos (Miss Becca, in a cupcake shop, wearing her most “fashion” outfit)… and I love the results!

The background is a sheet of the kraft resist paper, and you can see lots of new and older Tim Holtz goodies at work here. The layered flower was created by die-cutting some of the stickers. I’d suggest backing your sticker with cardstock if you’re going to try that at home!

I used one of the kraft glassine envelopes (I used Tim’s texture hammer all over it to get a funky beat up look) to hold my journaling tag. At the top of the tag I used one of the reinforcers (coated with glossy accents & allowed to dry) + some tissue tape at the top of it.

You’ll also see a misted rosette underneath it – it’s actually just a 1/2 of a rosette since I didn’t want it as bulky underneath my journaling where it wouldn’t be seen anyhow.

the letters for “This” are grungeboard topped with distress ink + glossy accents. I use that stuff on everything!!

So there you have it – layout #3 that I made for Tim. So much fun stuff, a lot of which you’ll be seeing in my upcoming in-person classes (once I can get my hands on more!!). If you have questions about the page or anything feel free to ask!

I’ve been hard at work over here – on a lot of projects! I will have a new on-line class opening for registration next month (it’ll start May 1!!) but I’ve got more too. Something that’s really exciting for me is gearing up for a spring filled with local events. I’m super excited to be offering a fresh crop of classes featuring my favorites from Girls’ Paperie, Glitz Designs, Jenni Bowlin, Pink Paislee, Studio Calico, Tim Holtz, and Webster’s Pages products. Most of the goodies are so new for my classes- I don’t yet have them. So do stay tuned for peeks and such in the coming weeks.
You will find two re-worked pages here at my blog (at top, just under header). The Creative Workshops page will have in-depth information about classes that I have scheduled, additional images (as available), and when kits are available for purchase I’ll list that information there (as well as note it here on the blog main page) as well. My Event Dates page is where you’ll find the details on where I’m teaching, when, and how to sign up.

So what’s in my workshops this year? Well, a lot of scrapbook layouts. A lot of techniques and project-focused (vs general “idea”) classes, and also a few classes where they are a hybrid between class and crop. Some instruction, killer kits, and some free play time. You’re also going to see foof-a-la buttons pop up in class. These are now hard to find, and quite honestly just the best button mixes I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with. I took my search on-line and gathered these for class kits. You’re also going to see more razzle dazzle and all the fun I can dream up.
Oh yes, I’m working on some super cute bags and even some mason jars as embellishment containers for class kits this year.

Overall? I *love* how this line up is coming together. LOVE IT! From the little details like what color stickles to use (always fun!) to the bigger picture of class names and focuses. If you’re local I hope you can come say hi! If not? I can totally ship kits (once ready). Here’s the dates:
